Training for the 5 Boroughs Ride is more than muscle. My trips around Central Park are about learning to navigate walkers, runners, pedi cabs, taxis, skateboarders, strollers, elegant swerving Italians on rental bikes riding 5 abreast and the bike racers at 20mph.
Saturday biking adventure was just that. It included an excellent Italian lunch sitting next to a beautiful trio of Frenchmen overlooking the Liberty Lady, a ride on Staten Island Ferry, biking to see the Alice Austen House Museum and a return ride up the east side past the UN. It is certainly a brain challenger to keep track of everything on the road. The crosstown on 55th got scary at Park and I chose to walk the bike for a few blocks instead of argue with Saturday 5:30pm traffic. It was not the best choice to get back to the Park but I followed a "bike lane" that disappeared after two blocks. Did you know they banned cars on the SIF right after 9/11 and it carries 60,000 people per day?
