Another lost and found female photographer:
Alice Austen was born in 1866 and received her first camera at the age of 11. She was from a society family and was able to navigate the public world probably more than other Victorian women of her time. Her photographs are a mixture of what she liked to call her larkey life, her travels and the immigrants on the streets of New York. I liked the word so much, I wrote it down. Doesn't it sound rich to have a larkey life? She produced a book about ladies bicycling. After the stock market crash she attempted to support herself with a tea house at Clear Comfort the family home overlooking Manhattan and selling off the contents of the house. Alice ended up nearly catatonic in the state Poor House. A box of her photo plates was discovered and turned in to a profit for her. She spent the next very short time until her death in a private nursing home.
